Why Losing the Life I Thought I Wanted Helped Me Build the One I Deserve—A Rebuilding Success Story for Women Going Through Divorce

How Rebuilding My Life After Divorce Helped Me Create A Life I Could Never Have Imagined

Picture this: It’s a rainy Tuesday, you’re staring at your soggy cup of tea with the reused teabag, and life has done that thing it does—gone completely off script.

The future you imagined—the perfect partner, the dream job, the white picket fence—poof. Gone.

But here’s the thing no one tells you: sometimes, losing the life you thought you wanted is the first step to rebuilding a life that’s even better.

Let me take you back to when I was a stay-at-home mum for 14 years. No income, no savings, no security. Married for 16 years. My life revolved around being a mum, a wife and my home. When my marriage crumbled, my imagined future crumbled with it, and honestly, I didn’t know which way was up.

Fast forward to today: I’ve gone from starting over with nothing, (I mean no one would employ me at even minimum wage jobs - single mum to 3 with no recent experience or childcare.....erm no thanks! ) to winning national business awards, speaking on stages, working with corporate clients, and securing my dream home. Losing the life I thought I wanted was the plot twist I never saw coming—but one I wouldn’t trade for anything.

Rebuilding Life After Divorce: When it all falls apart

We all have that perfect future we imagine—a Pinterest-worthy vision of how our lives should unfold. Maybe it’s marriage, kids, grandkids, retirement and staying happily married thoughout it all. But life doesn’t always follow the plan.

Here’s the truth: even if your original future had worked out, there’s no guarantee it would’ve been perfect. Life throws curveballs—illness, deaths, job losses, heartbreaks etc.

But the beauty of losing one future is this: it makes room to create a better one.

The Turning Point: From Stay-at-Home Mum to Entrepreneur

After my imagined future fell apart, I had a choice: stay stuck in the past or create something new. Trust me, it wasn’t easy. Starting over after 14 years at home felt like climbing Everest in a bikini without a map. But I knew I wanted a better future—for me and my kids.

So, I started small. I took online courses, learned new skills, and began saying yes to opportunities that scared me. I’ll be honest—those early steps felt terrifying. But every small win built my confidence. Creating a reel when I couldn't even post a photo on facebook without help from my kids? Oh the embarrassment for my kids and the pride for me! 🤣The first time I got paid for my expertise? I cried. The first time I spoke on a podcast? I thought my voice would shake right out of my throat. But those moments were the building blocks of the life I was creating.

What My New Life Looks Like—and How You Can Build Yours

Today, my life looks nothing like the one I imagined—and that’s a good thing. Here’s what I’ve built:

  • National Business Awards: Proof that your past doesn’t define your future.

  • Speaking on Stages and Podcasts: Sharing my journey not only helps others but has also given me a sense of purpose and mission.

  • Securing My Dream Home: Going from debt to financial independence is a milestone I’m proud of every day.

  • Deep, Close Relationships with My "Team”: My kids and I have formed an unbreakable bond through all the ups and downs. They’re my constant cheerleaders, my drive, and my greatest joy (sometimes frustration! 🤣).

  • New Connections and Unexpected Friendships: Building a bigger, more supportive community than I ever dreamed of. From business mentors to newfound friends who lift me up, I’ve discovered the power of true connection and what it means to never feel alone.

  • Discovering Inner Strength: Reinventing myself revealed a braver, more capable version of me I never knew existed.
